Kennel Cough
What causes Kennel Cough?
Kennel Cough (Infectious Tracheo-Bronchitis) is the most common respiratory disease of dogs.
The primary cause of Kennel Cough is a bacterium called Bordatella bronchiseptica, although
other bacteria may also cause the disease. All these bacteria are airborne, which makes Kennel
Cough highly infectious.
What are the symptoms of Kennel Cough?
Once your dog has been
exposed to kennel cough, it will usually take 5-7 days before symptoms can be observed.
In infected dogs, the bacteria and viruses multiply and destroy the
delicate ciliary lining of the dog's trachea, thus irritating its upper respiratory tract and
producing the characteristic high-pitched "honking" cough. While kennel cough is typically
described as a dry hacking cough, there can also be sneezing, accompanied by increased nasal
discharge. These symptoms usually last from a few days to several weeks. Some dogs also may
have a fever, depression, and loss of appetite.
Is Kennel Cough Fatal?
It can be. A consequence of Kennel cough is a weakened ability to fight other diseases. While many dogs
will recover from the disease unassisted within a couple of weeks, Kennel
Cough can be fatal to older or weaker dogs.
How is it treated??
Kennel cough is treated with antibiotics to prevent
further secondary infections and a cough suppressant.
Can Kennel Cough be prevented?
Yes (99%). An easy prevention is an intra nasal vaccine administered by your vet. Intrac lasts 6/8 months and Nobi-Vac for 1 year. These vaccines are additional to your dog's annual booster and will not be given unless you specifically request it.
What is your policy on Kennel Cough Vaccination?
All dogs boarding between the 1st May - 31st December are required to have a Kennel Cough vaccination, at least 15 days prior to arrival. You must bring the
vaccination certificate with you. Any dog without a valid vaccination certificate will not be accepted for boarding.
Since we started in 1981 we have always insisted on vaccination for all dogs. We hope this
explains why we rigorously follow this rule. After more than 2 decades at Frogs Hall, we have
not had any problem with our boarders.
